I held it in my hand today...a precious piece of stone
I took it from the diamond man
And he told me I could take it home
"But you had better watch your step
'Cause diamonds are evil things", he said
"Don't show anyone this stone
Put it in your pocket and run right home"

And so I did. I took it right away
Then the diamond man just smiled and turned away

I just saw the diamond man again
And he treated me like his best friend
Quit a nice selection he showed me
And he knew how happy I would be

Diamond man can you see me at all?
Will you be there to catch me when I fall?
Look how my supply of jewels has grown
Even in a crowd I'm all alone

Today I saw the diamond man hiding in his jewels
And suddenly I realized
Diamonds are for fools

But I'm no fool so I just walked away
Then the diamond man had nothing more to say

I just saw the diamond man again
